Heritage Open Days in and around Wycombe
Heritage Open Days is the biggest history and culture festival in the UK. This year, it's held from the 6th to the 15th of September.
Essentially, it's a chance to see inside places that are normally closed to the public, learn from historians and even see the local heritage places you already love in a brand new light.
There's absolutely loads on all over the country but we've chosen some top events happening right here in Wycombe:
Hughenden's Heritage Route: Unveiling Connections - join guided walks on the 6th, 10th and 14th of September where experts will unveil hidden gems and the intricate web of connections past, present and future that can be found in Hughenden.
Wheatsheaf Inn Open Day - dating from 1399, this is the oldest secular building in the town and well worth a visit since its recent restoration. You'll also be able to see a photography exhibition of Old Wycombe inside.
History of a Chilterns Route - starting and finishing at the Dashwood Arms in Piddington, join Simon Cains on 8th September at 10am on a 3-mile walk covering 2,000 years of history - including a medieval settlement, turnpike road and more.
Pann Mill Open Day - the last working mill on the River Wye will grind again on 8th September from 11am to 5pm.
Tour Holy Trinity Church in Penn - on 7th and 8th September from 10.30am to 4pm. Part of the church dates from the 12th century and it contains a rare 15th century painting of the Last Judgment, alongside lots of other historical titbits.
Wycombe Heritage Walks - on 8th September at various times. Local historian Willie Reid is leading 3 different walks around town: 'Chairmen and Chair Boys', 'The Heart of High Wycombe', and 'Back Through History'.
Revealed by the Creator, Created by the Pen - join artist and collector Razwan Baig in this beautiful exhibition of Islamic art in the Guildhall, a building not normally open to the public, from now until 8th September from 10am-4pm. It includes one of the largest private collections of Islamic manuscripts in Europe.
Walk along the River Wye with Chiltern Rangers - a guided walk on 8th September at 1.30pm along the Wye to Funges Meadow and back, discovering more about the internationally rare habitat of the chalk stream.
Where in Wycombe am I?
Where can you find this striking piece of street art? And -- go on -- how many bees can you see?

Last week's answer: I was next to the old Wycombe District Council offices overlooking the town hall. This paved area offers a spot of peace amongst the noisy chaos of the Magic Roundabout and Queen Victoria Road. Heather at High Wycombe Life magazine informs me that it's known colloquially as "Jack's Garden", after Jack Scruton - the man who spearheaded the campaign to save the Rye from being developed for housing back in the '60s.
Weather In Wycombe
We’re waking up to an official “Rainfall Warning” in Bucks, with some parts of the country expected to receive over a month’s rain in two days.
In other words… cancel those weekend BBQ plans.
