Where in Wycombe Am I?
Answer from two weeks ago: I was looking at the Red Lion on the portico next to B&M on the High Street. The original statue stood here too, from around 1772 — although it wasn’t shops below back ten but rather a grand coaching inn, also known as the Red Lion until its demolition in the 1960s. Winston Churchill stood on the portico next to the lion when he visited Wycombe in 1945 to give a post-war speech, as did Benjamin Disraeli before him when he made his bids for election. The original Red Lion is still going strong in the galleries of Wycombe Museum. The one standing in the High Street today was restored in 2017 after a successful campaign by a group of locals.
